Vocabulary

Allegiance - Duty, loyalty

Alliance - Association; friendship

Anarchy - No government

Boycott - To reduce or stop the use and purchase of a certain product or activity

Broadside - A single printed sheet relating information about an event, person, or idea and is posted for the public to read

Committee of Correspondence - Official group appointed to spread news to others and to propose, coordinate, and carry out actions.  First such group was organized in 1765 in opposition to the Stamp Act.

Constitution - Fundamental laws and principles by which a group is governed

Delegates - Representatives; those who speak for others

Democracy - Government by the people

Duty - Tax

Grievances - Complaints; troubles

Monarchy - Governed by a single person:  king, queen

Petition - Written, formal request

Propaganda - Devises deliberately used to influence thoughts and actions in a particular cause

Rebellion - Resistance against the government

Sovereign - Independent; subject to no higher authority

Tories - Name given to those who strongly supported the views of King George III and  Parliament.

                Colonists who were loyal to the King were also referred to as Loyalists.

Tyranny - Cruel and unjust use of power

Whigs - A political party in England ; but will become a name given to people in the colonies who protested against the King and Parliament.
