Open House on January 13 th

Become a Volunteer: Donate Your Time to Support History,
Education and Preservation at Poplar Forest

Forest , VA – Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest will host a Volunteer Open House on Sunday, January 13, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m . The event is open to anyone interested in becoming a volunteer at Poplar Forest . Those attending the open house will have an opportunity to meet with current volunteers and hear first-hand about the volunteer experience.

Poplar Forest seeks volunteers who are interested in history, archaeology, historic preservation and enjoy working with adults and children. Volunteers are needed to work with school children in hands-on educational programs, assist in the museum/admission shop, and lead guided tours through the historic house and landscape.

Poplar Forest was an important part of Thomas Jefferson’s life: a private retreat, situated far from public scrutiny and the demands on his time. Jefferson sojourned to Poplar Forest , his most personal architectural creation and landscape, between the ages of 66-80 to find rest and leisure, rekindle his creativity and spend time with his grandchildren. Jefferson designed the octagonal house at Poplar Forest during his second term as President of the United States .

Since 1983, the nonprofit Corporation for Jefferson 's Poplar Forest has worked to rescue and restore Thomas Jefferson's plantation and retreat home for the educational and cultural benefit of the public.

All volunteers participate in a thorough training program, consisting of four three-hour training classes supported by comprehensive training materials. Access to the Poplar Forest library, a discount on purchases in the museum shop, free admission to Poplar Forest for you and your immediate family, and public recognition for volunteer service are only a few of the benefits offered to those who donate their time to Poplar Forest.

“We are proud of the fact that more than 77% of our volunteers have been serving at Poplar Forest for five years or more,” said Dianne Kinney, Manager of Visitor Services and Volunteers. “We look forward to the opportunity to tell you more about our volunteer program and the work that we are doing on this state-of-the-art restoration project. It’s an exciting time to be a volunteer at Poplar Forest .”
