Jefferson’s Passions Series: “Botany & Friendship”

November 13 from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

$25.00 – $40.00

Thomas Jefferson was a man of many varied interests.  Join us at the house he deemed “the best dwelling house in the state” as we delve into topics he found particularly fascinating: from the arts to agriculture, literature to wine, philosophy to natural sciences, and more. Each talk in the series includes a wine and cheese reception following the presentation. Tickets are $25/each per talk or $45 for admission to both 2024 series events.

Nov. 13th 6:00 p.m.- “Botany & Friendship”

Jefferson wrote to Madame de Tesse in October 1801 that “Altho’ the times are big with political events, yet I shall say nothing on that or any subject but the innocent ones of botany & friendship.” Using Jefferson’s own words from letters to various friends and family members, Thomas Jefferson (as portrayed by Bill Barker) and Peggy Cornett, Curator of Plants at Monticello, will launch upon a conversation about Jefferson’s many horticultural friendships and relationships throughout his life.

Dec. 10th 6:00 p.m.- “Jefferson and the Virginia Wine Industry”

Christine Vrooman of Ankida Ridge Winery joins Poplar Forest to discuss one of Jefferson’s most famous passions: wine. Enjoy a discussion of Jefferson’s wine preferences and how they changed throughout his life, his attempts to begin the Virginia wine industry, and learn about the state’s industry today.
