“Botany I rank with the most valuable sciences, whether we consider its subjects as furnishing the principal subsistence of life to man & beast, delicious varieties for our tables, refreshments from our orchards, the adornments of our flower-borders, shade and perfume of our groves, materials of our buildings or medicaments for our bodies.”- Jefferson to Thomas Cooper, Monticello, Oct. 7, 1814
Join Poplar Forest and Kaye Moomaw, owner of Irvington Spring Farm and caretaker of the three oval beds of roses restored to Jefferson’s original design in 2021, as she discusses the history and proper care of roses. Talks offered at 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. In addition to the talks, see Kaye care for the rose beds at the north side of the house and take home your own piece of history. Propagated selections of historic plants from Poplar Forest will be available for sale in the Museum Shop.
Admission to the Historic Rose Sale & Talk with Kaye Moomaw is included with regular admission. Admission to the property includes either a docent-guided or self-guided tour of Jefferson’s retreat home, access to exhibits in the lower level and wing of offices of the villa retreat, and outdoor exhibits throughout the property.
